This week I read two articles that focus on the assessment of students in this day and age. The first article was Lorrie Shepard's "The Role of Assessment in a Learning Culture" and the second was Black and Williams' "Inside the Black Box: Raising Standards through Classroom Assessment. Both of these articles delved into the student assessment, what could be improved, and where these assessments were lacking. While these articles were written by different people, there seemed to be a running consensus about their feelings towards improvement upon the education system and the way students are being taught. There was also a firm stance, held by all parties, about how assessments should be used to understand where students need to improve and not about extrinsic rewards provided to them for doing well.
